HOBBS — Sean Cruce went 4 for 5, leading a 16-hit attack, and the Clovis Wildcats opened their 2003 summer schedule with a 16-4 victory over Hobbs Saturday afternoon.
The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to rain and lightning.
The Cats scored four runs in the second for a 5-0 lead. Then, after Hobbs tallied four in the third, Clovis put the game away with four more in the fourth.
The Cats scored in every frame of the seven-inning contest except the third, finishing off the Eagles with a four-run seventh.
Ryan Denton went 3 for 5 with a double for Clovis, while Mark Young had a single and a triple in five at-bats.
Robert Riggins earned the pitching victory, allowing eight hits in six innings with two walks and three strikeouts. At the plate, Riggins also reached base all four times, drawing three walks and getting hit by a pitch.
Young finished up in the seventh, giving up one hit and striking out one.
Clovis returns to action on Monday with a 5 p.m. doubleheader against Levelland at Bell Park.
