A 16-year-old boy is recuperating in a Lubbock hospital today after being struck by a vehicle near Ned Houk Park north of Clovis early Thursday morning.
Danny Benavides is in “stable condition” in the intensive care unit at Lubbock’s Covenant Medical Center, according to his mother, who was at the hospital on Thursday.
Benavides was struck at 2 a.m. by a vehicle near mile marker 11, just north of Ned Houk Park, according to a press release from the New Mexico State Police.
“The driver was from Clovis,” said Lt. Rick Durham of the New Mexico State Police. “He was driving southbound on State Road 209. It was dark. The young man moved from the west to the east in front of the vehicle. He was on foot. The driver swerved to the right to avoid him, and Benavides was struck by the left front fender.”
The driver stayed at the scene, Durham said.
“The driver immediately stopped, turned around and called for assistance,” he said.
No citations have been issued, according to the state police. The incident remains under investigation, Durham said.
