Clovis road to be named after former commissioner

The city of Clovis announced this week it will rename a road bordering Veterans’ Park after longtime City Commissioner Robert Moreno.
Moreno, who died following a heart attack Feb. 8, was instrumental in creating the park in west Clovis and, at one point, the city commission considered naming the park after him.
Now, the city will rename Bonita Road, which runs along the park’s eastern side, R.L. Moreno Road. The dedication ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. today at the road site.
“I think he should be remembered for his hard work for the community,” said longtime District 3 Commissioner Isidro Garcia. “Everything that has happened for the community in the last 15 or 16 years, he had a hand in.”
Moreno was a city commissioner from 1988 until his death, serving as mayor pro-tem from 1992 to 2000 and as district director for the New Mexico Municipal League.
Besides leading the way in getting an F-111 aircraft on display at Veterans’ Park, Moreno was chairman of the city’s drainage committee and worked tirelessly to improve drainage throughout the city, said City Manager Ray Mondragon.
“Commissioner Moreno was a person who cared about his district and the constituents he served,” Mondragon said.
