Lady Cats beat Lovington

LOVINGTON — Clovis coach Miles Watters was pleased with the effort. The execution, he said, will come.

Sophomore point guard Tori Quintana led a balanced attack with 17 points and senior post Monique Walker added 12 as the Lady Wildcats opened their season Tuesday with a 59-43 win over Lovington.

“I think the effort was there, but it was typical of a first game,” Watters said. “We threw the ball up in the stands a few times and had too many turnovers.

“We got out and defended well and there were definitely some good signs, though.”

Lovington (0-1) chopped a 12-point halftime deficit to four points in the third quarter before Clovis pulled away again.

Watters said a switch to a halfcourt trap turned the game back in Clovis’ favor.

Quintana scored 11 of her 17 points in the second half, including a trio of 3-pointers.

Sophomore Brittany Blackmon added nine points for Clovis, and Roxanne Luera added eight.

“We didn’t value possession of the ball, but that’s going to happen when you get out and run,” Watters said. “It’s just going to take a little while to find our comfort zone.”

Jenna Compton led Lovington with 13 points, while Kimberly Choate added nine.
