This is the first Lord of the Rings that I have seen at the theaters. You see, if the movie goes over two and a half hours it loses my interest. I need candy or something to entertain me otherwise I get antsy. Even though I love the Lord of the Rings movies I wasn’t sure if I would be able to sit in a theater for that long without pausing the movie and getting a drink or going to the bathroom. An odd thing happened though, during Return of the King I was captivated until the end. I never got anxious to stop the movie and do something else. I was completely involved with every character and regardless of what my bladder was telling me I had to stay until the end.
I am thrilled to say that the Return of the King is by far the best of the three Lord of the Rings. Peter Jackson has done a spectacular job directing and linking these three movies together. Although long, each movie is worth watching. The best thing about this last movie is that it surpasses the other two and makes your heart happy. When the movies first started it took a while to get me involved, in this last movie I was literally on the edge of my seat.
I have many praises for the final chapter of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The scenery is spectacular. More cities are involved in this final movie and some, like the Stone City, are extravagant and took my breath away. I can’t imagine the time it took to create the set designs for this movie. The costumes, music and style are exactly like the other two, which is splendid. The battle scenes are wonderful. The only thing I hesitate in enjoying is the final twenty minutes. This is where the movie seemed to drag. I realize it is important to completely tie everything together and this does it very well, but I didn’t need that to have closure.
I am afraid that I must close my review even though I have so much more to tell you. The best summary I can give of my thoughts and emotions on this film is that it is well worth watching. The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King will definitely win at least one Oscar. For the first time since the Lord of the Rings came out, I am truly excited about these movies and cannot wait to own the whole collection.
