CHS graduate now principal in Carlsbad

A Clovis High School graduate has landed a job as principal of Jefferson Montessori Academy in Carlsbad.
Mark Barela is a 1990 CHS graduate where he was a drum major in the marching band and member of the French club. He began his music education degree at Texas A&M before finishing at Eastern New Mexico University. He later returned for his master’s degree in education.
“I enjoy working with the kids,” he said. “So I think through my grad courses, being in administration led me to this direction.”
Jefferson Montessori is the first public Montessori charter school in New Mexico. Barela, who has family in Clovis, said he doesn’t know if he will return to his hometown education system.
“You never know,” Barela said. “The options are always open but right now I have roots set in Carlsbad so we will see where that road takes me.”
