Zias play UNM tough, but drop 1-0 decision

ALBUQUERQUE — The New Mexico Lobos pushed over an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth Tuesday afternoon to get past Eastern New Mexico University 1-0 in women’s softball at Lobo Field.

Three UNM pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout against the Zias (10-27), who lost for the 12th time in 13 games.

New Mexico (26-18) broke through against ENMU senior Maegan Rhoten (3-11) when Robyn Hutson led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice, and scored on a two-out error by ENMU second baseman Tracy Jordan.

Amy Dumas (7-10), the second UNM pitcher, worked three innings for the win while Ashley Perkins pitched a perfect seventh to earn her first save.

Rhoten survived two first-inning walks and a second-inning leadoff double by the Lobos’ Ora Hensley to finish with a three-hitter.

ENMU got its leadoff hitter on base four times, but advanced only one runner as far as second. The Zias’ first two hitters reached in the second inning, but both were thrown out trying to steal second by Lobos catcher Kim Korsak.
