Groups seek lodger’s tax funds

Clovis lodger’s tax board members heard requests for funding from 17 local project organizers at a board meeting at the Holiday Inn Monday.
The lodger’s tax board distributes money, to be used only for promotional purposes, for events that bring tourists to Clovis.
Board Chairman Brian Chambers said the board has $145,000 to distribute in fiscal 2004-2005 and has received about $233,000 worth of requests.
The board members will continue considering the requests at a public meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday in City Hall. A final decision must be approved by the Clovis City Commission, Chambers said.
The requests heard Monday night were:
Clovis Youth Soccer, $1000;
City Parks and Recreation Department, for “Christmas in the Zoo,” $20,000; to purchase a male giraffe for the zoo, $15,000;
Curry Counted Mounted Patrol Rodeo, $6,000;
Girl Scouts, Sangre de Cristo Council, $575;
Professional Armed Forces Rodeo Association, $1,000;
Our Lady of Guadalupe and San Jose Mission Fiesta, $4,000;
Ned Houk Motor Sports Complex, $24,000;
Fiery Film Festival, $10,000;
Clovis-Curry County Chamber of Commerce, $85,000, for Pioneer Days, Balloon Jubilee, Badlands Motor Rally, Brochures, High Plans Junior Rodeo, promotional items, tourism packets and postage, maps of Clovis, a special events and marketing director, fun and games tourism;
Cowgirl Rodeo Association, $3,210.88;
Curry County Fair, $5,000;
Miss Rodeo New Mexico Pageant, $2,500;
Hoopla, three-man basketball tournament, $6,500;
Clovis Cultural Fair, $6,000;
Desert Cruzers car show, $5,500;
Downtown Arts Festival, $12,000;
Christmas lights for the city of Clovis, $20,000;
Guy Leader softball tournaments, $3,500, $1,600.
