Mrs. Jessie May Cathey, 94, of Pep, died Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.

She was born on Feb. 11, 1910, near Gilmer, Texas, to Emma and James A. Bryce.

She grew up at Antlers, Okla. The family later moved to Dalhart, Texas. She married N.C. “Nolan” Cathey on July 25, 1930, in Clayton. They lived in Dalhart for a short time before moving to O’Bar in New Mexico. Several years later they moved to Albuquerque. They moved several more times before settling in Pep in 1953, where they owned and operated the grocery and feed store along with a gas station. In 1954 she was appointed Postmaster for Pep and served until 1975 when she retired. In 1978, they moved to Fort Worth, Texas. In 1984 they returned to Portales to make their home. She had been a resident at the Retirement Ranch in Clovis since 1998. She was a member of the Trinity Life Center, formerly known as First Assembly of God Church in Portales.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Clell, Sidney, James, and Franklin Bryce; a sister, Corda Fay Ritchey; a son, N.C. Cathey Jr.; and by her husband.

Survivors include three sons, Bobby Cathey (and wife, Buna) of Pep, Wendell Cathey (Maggie) of Hobbs, and James Cathey (Thyra) of Portales; a daughter, May Ruth Caddell (Daniel) of Portales; 14 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Jim Maxwell will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Billy, Dusty, Brian, Donny, Mitchell, and T.J. Cathey.
