Mrs. Marcia Janice Carpenter, 60, of The Colony, Texas, a juvenile detention officer and homemaker, died Friday, April 1, 2005, in Plano, Texas.

She was born on April 22, 1944, in Clovis, to Clifford and Julia Leake.

She attended high school in Bovina, and at the age of 17, moved to Clovis where she lived for 43 years. Her hobbies were reading, television, word games, gardening and sports, especially basketball. Family members said she enjoyed conversations with friends and family, cooking, music and law enforcement. She was active in Mothers Against Drunk Drivers.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Survivors include her mother; two sisters, Kay Williams (and husband, Tommy) of Bovina and Margie Owens (Jack) of Austin, Texas; two sons, Lt. Col. Forrest Carpenter (Nickie) of El Paso and Marlin Carpenter (and significant other, Sharon Henry); a grandson, Jacob Carpenter; and a granddaughter, Victoria Carpenter (Tory).

Cremation has taken place.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any Multiple Sclerosis charity.

Arrangements are by Steed-Todd Funeral Home of Clovis.
