Governor coming to Clovis

Gov. Bill Richardson will be traveling through eastern New Mexico today and Thursday, updating local communities on the recent legislative session and highlighting capital outlay projects.

He will also attended a fund-raiser luncheon Thursday at the Chaparral Country Club, which will give area residents the opportunity to thank the governor for specific capital outlay projects in Clovis, event organizers said.

“I think sometimes we forget to say thank you,” said Beverlee McClure, president of Clovis Community College and co-sponsor of the event. “He is a governor that recognizes the rural areas, and of course gave the $1 million for the business enterprise center. I don’t know that another governor would do that.”

Each plate will cost $50 payable at the door, a press release from the Chamber of Commerce showed, and the funds raised will go to the governor’s political campaign.

McClure said she continues to stay in contact with the governor’s office about budget vetoes he made which she feels may place an undue burden on students at Clovis Community College and other higher education institutions across the state.

“I definitely think that he needs to review that education budget to make sure those unintended consequences don’t hurt the students of New Mexico,” she said.

Officials with the governor’s office said there will be an announcement regarding higher education funding at a news conference at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Clovis Carver Library.

“It will be a positive announcement regarding higher education in New Mexico, particularly in your area,” said spokesman Pahl Shipley, adding that he could not reveal what that announcement will be.

The governor traditionally travels the state and talks to communities about what happened at the session, Shipley said.
