Family Child Care program provides safe, secure environment

27th Services Squadron

Air Force certified Family Child Care (FCC) providers operate child care businesses in their homes and provide a nurturing and loving environment for children.
Each provider can care for up to six children with only two children under the age of two. This small grouping allows providers the opportunity to spend individual time with each child and allows children to form close relationships with other children in the home.
In addition to providing care during normal duty hours, Family Child Care can provide care for parents who need child care services in the evening or weekends, as well as for those who need care for hourly, part-time or non-traditional work hours or school.
Prior to licensing, all providers must undergo extensive background and reference checks, complete Red Cross First Aid and cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification, obtain liability insurance, complete home inspections by various base agencies and attend a week-long training session. Licensed providers receive monthly unannounced inspections by the FCC Coordinator to ensure their home environment, daily routines, materials and equipment, interactions and activities meet all standards established by the Air Force.
Even after initial training is completed, Air Force Family Child Care providers must continue their training by attending training classes and completing the 15 Family Child Care training modules. Providers enhance their caregiving skills through practice and feedback received from the FCC coordinator and training and curriculum specialist.
All licensed providers have access to a vast array of materials in the Lending Library which helps them provide developmentally appropriate activities for all children. Providers are also trained in nutrition and meal planning and provide well balanced meals to children.
The FCC coordinator can provide information about each provider to help parents find the best provider for their child. Currently providers are available in all base housing areas including Clovis and Portales. For more information on Cannon’s Family Child Care program, please contact Jim Hernandez at
