Salvation Army short of goal for needy
Eastern New Mexico’s branch of the Salvation Army is “only halfway” to meeting the needs of area families, Capt. Tammy Ray said on Monday.

The Christian-based organization has angel trees set up at local stores to give residents the opportunity to purchase gifts for a specific child. “We have 520 children left who have not received presents on the angel trees,” Ray said.

The trees are located at Wal-Mart and North Plains Mall in Clovis.

Ray said the nonprofit organization also utilizes kettle donations in assisting families. “We raised $3,000 on Saturday due to volunteers from the three local Kiwanis clubs and the high school ROTC students,” Ray said. “One hundred percent of this money will be used to purchase holiday meals, gift cards and toys.”

Last arraignment made in drug bust
Courtney Timms, one of 15 individuals arrested in a year-long methamphetamine trafficking investigation, stood Monday in federal court in Albuquerque as the last defendant in the case to be arraigned, Assistant United States Attorney Sharon Kimball said.

Officials searched eight Clovis locations on Nov. 3-4 as part of the year-long federal investigation into methamphetamine trafficking. Guns, an undisclosed amount of cash and a small amount of methamphetamine and paraphernalia were recovered, court records show.

Timms (born in 1973) was arrested in Lubbock on Nov. 3, the same day seven individuals were arrested in Clovis.
All 15 individuals indicted by a grand jury on Oct. 26 were taken into custody, arraigned and stood for their detention hearings, Kimball said Monday.

Troy Cole (born in 1965) was the last defendant to be arrested over Thanksgiving in Roswell, and was arraigned in federal court in Albuquerque last week, Kimball said.

The prosecution provided evidence to the defense, and defense counsels have until March 1 to review, make motions and provide evidence to the prosecution, Kimball said.

Trials are scheduled to begin in August, Kimball said.
