Outdoore Rec provides play gear all year

Airman 1st Class Thomas Trower

Many families are searching for family events now that summer has come and school is out. One problem many face is that they do not have the right equipment to do things like go camping, boating, sailing or just barbecue in the back yard.
The Outdoor Recreation (ODR) office has resolved many of these issues by offering a variety of equipment for families to rent on a daily, weekend or weekly basis. Equipment ranges from tents and sleeping bags to boats and jumbo slip and slides.
While some may think it’s normal to be able to rent folding tables and chairs, they may not expect that they can rent campers, turkey fryers or even a dunk tank.
Rental fees vary on the equipment and items may be rented for one day, a normal weekend, a holiday weekend or even the entire week.
Most items are available to all personnel, but some do have special requirements for rental.
Anyone interested in renting a powered watercraft must first attend a Boater Safety Course at Fort Sumner Lake. For $15, ODR will provide transportation, food and pay all course fees.
The courses is comprised of a U.S. Coast Guard Boaters Safety Course and ODR On-Water Familiarization Course and the next available course is scheduled for August 11. This course is not required to rent sailboats, skis or wakeboards.
Equipment that is transported on a trailer or needs to be towed has special requirements. These items require a proper tow vehicle, a two-inch ball and a flat four-wiring harness.
Along with providing equipment for personal ventures, ODR also organizes travel packages to various areas across the region.
Their next adventure will be July 14-17 at the Peregrine Pines Campground at the U.S. Air Force Academy Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, Colo. The group will camp out overnight and go biking on the Colorado Springs trail system and travel through the Garden of the Gods nature center to view wildlife, rock formations and the scenery. They will return to Cannon no later than 11 p.m. July 17. The trip is limited to the first 11 participants who sign up by July 7. ODR has four bikes to rent, but all youths must bring their own bike.
The summer months don’t have to creep by uneventfully if Cannon members take advantage of their privileges at ODR.
