FORT SUMNER — The Santa Rosa Lions used a mix of Daniel Zamora and big special teams plays in posting a rout of the homestandings Foxes.
The Lions (4-0) lost four fumbles and only outgained Fort Sumner 223-170, but they scored ona 5-yard fumble return, a 55-yard punt return and a 70-yard kickoff return.
Cass Dimitroff scored for Fort Sumner (2-2) on a 2-yard run in the first quarter.
Bovina-New Deal game suspended: At New Deal, Texas, lightning brought an early end to Friday’s clash between Bovina and New Deal.
The host Lions, ranked sixth in Class 1A, held a 14-0 lead when play was stopped with 10:57 left in the second quarter. Bovina athletic director Dale Fullerton said the teams waited for more than an hour before play was called.
Fullerton said because of other school-related activities, the teams would not be able to finish the game on Saturday, leaving the status of the contest in limbo. He said both schools have open dates later in the season, but they do not match up.
New Deal got its touchdowns in the first quarter when Anthony Arellano recovered a blocked punt in the end zone and Jason Ybarra went over on a 2-yard run.
Springer 54, Clovis Christian 6: At Springer, the homestanding Red Devils won big to improve to 2-1 this season.
The lone score for the Eagles (1-3) came on a 22-yard pass from Keeson Bell to Daniel Oullette in the third quarter. No other information was available on the game.
Muleshoe 21, Shallowater 14: At Shallowater, Texas, quarterback Garrett Riley connected with Timothy Conner for three touchdown passes to help the Mules stay unbeaten.
Conner finished with five catches for 80 yards , including scoring strikes from Riley of 13 yards in the first quarter, 34 yards in the second and 10 yards in the fourth. Muleshoe also added a safety in the second period.
Riley finished 15-of-31 through the air for 201 yards, helping the Mules post a 282-245 margin in total offense.
Farwell 33, Smyer 6: At Smyer, Texas, the Steers got two touchdown runs from both Alex Olmos and Brett Howard and cruised to the victory.
Farwell’s 12-0 lead at the quarter held up through three stanzas before the Steers (2-1) added three TDs in the final 10 minutes.
The only tally for Smyer (1-1) came on a 5-yard run by Chris Smith with 3:32 left in the game.
