The owner of a Clovis steel business reported Friday more than $20,000 was embezzled from company accounts since January, according to police reports.
Brandon Reid of Steelworks told police a former employee had written and cashed several checks between January and August. The expenditures were unrelated to company business, the report said.
Banking was one of the responsibilities of the former employee, according to Reid.
The company owner provided police with copies of the canceled checks and said he would continue to check bank records to see if there were more discrepancies, the report said.
Mayors to take part in news conference
Clovis Mayor David Lansford and Portales Mayor Orlando Ortega will participate in a news conference with Gov. Bill Richardson at 1 p.m. today in Santa Fe, according to Lansford.
The governor will make an announcement regarding water initiatives, according to a news advisory from his office.
Lansford said he and Ortega were invited by the governor’s office to talk about the proposed Ute Water Project.
Sticky situation occurs in office
The manager of a local trailer park discovered Friday the locks of his office had been glued closed, according to a police report.
Around 10:30 p.m., Victor Vishnetske of Towne Talk trailer park at 14th and Norris streets flagged down police to report the damage.
The officer observed the locks to the office had been filled with glue and would have to be replaced at a cost of approximately $100, the report said.
The case is under investigation, the report said.
