TWO LIFE-ALTERING events led a former Clovis resident into the world of fiction.

IN MAY 2001, Barbara Cook flew to her native England to arrange her mother’s funeral. Meanwhile, a devastating tornado was ripping through Colorado, where Cook was living at the time. Cook said the events destroyed her home and livelihood.

“IT WAS A nightmare,” she said.

INSTEAD OF FOCUSING on her loss, Cook became motivated to write. The 65-year-old who is a waitress and secretary immigrated to Clovis in 1979 from Wales, England. She has now released her first book titled, “The Faith of Nellie Morgan.”

ALTHOUGH WRITTEN as fiction, Cook said the story is based on 100 years of volatile family history centering around her paternal grandmother, who is the title character. According to the author, the book includes romance, adventure and inspiration.
COOK SAID she poured her heart and soul into the book.

“IT TOOK ME almost one year of research for the book,” she said, “and another to write it.”
