Getting snowed in can be fun when you’re in the mountainous village of Cloudcroft. Just take a short drive to the snow-covered hills for a day of snow tubing, snowmobiling, skiing and ice skating.

Nestled in the Sacramento Mountains, conditions are just right for plenty of outdoor winter activities. A welcoming cover of snow late this week allowed Triple M Snow Play to open to snowmobilers and tubers.

With more snow expected in Cloudcroft this weekend, Ski Cloudcroft is hoping to open for downhill skiing today. Personnel at the ski area said Friday that another five inches is needed to do that.

The site has one chair lift which is open daily, including during holidays and weekends ,as well as a beginner tow.

“Over eight inches of fresh powder has been reported so far,” said Cloudcroft Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jason Baldwin in a press release. “More snow is expected through Friday.”

“All of our winter entertainment areas are open and ready to be enjoyed,” Baldwin added. “We’re still very much a small town and very kid friendly. Life slows down a bit in Cloudcroft. You can escape from the everyday hassles of a busy schedule and enjoy our winter wonderland.”

Cloudcroft is located 18 miles from Alamogordo and overlooks White Sands National Monument. The timber-covered region offers a bounty of winter activities for people of all ages. Activities include ice skating on the James Sewell Ice Rink and tubing, snowmobiling and skiing on area hillsides. In addition, there is cross-country skiing and snowboarding. The town also has several retreat centers and resorts, several ranches which welcome tourists, camping and RV facilities, bed and breakfast spots, cabins and townhomes available for rent and hotels and motels.

Cloudcroft is located 40 miles from casino wagering and golf at the Inn of the Mountain Gods in Ruidoso and 16 miles from the Space Museum, Alameda Park Zoo and Toy Train Depot in Alamogordo.
