HOBBS — Senior Tiffani Reid shot 41-44 — 85 to finish second and lead Clovis High’s girls to a second-place finish in the season-opening Tasker Invitational golf tournament on Monday at Hobbs Country Club.

Reid earned a leg for the Class 5A state tournament, but the Lady Wildcats fell three shots short of doing likewise after posting a team score of 400.

Senior Amanda Estes was second for the Lady Cats, overcoming a 10 on one hole and an eight on another to finish at 53-47 — 100.

“Tiffani played well, and Amanda played well except for two holes,” CHS girls coach Cristy Hill said. “All the girls seemed a little tight at first, but they loosened up eventually.

“I think we’re headed in the right direction.”

The boys, meantime, shot 344 and finished three strokes behind runnerup Hobbs. Lubbock Trinity Christian won the event easily at 316.

Sophomore Tyler Fontenot led the Cats and was second individually with a round of 40-39 — 79, good for a state leg.

“We left a lot of shots out there,” CHS boys coach Cal Fullerton said. “We could’ve played a lot better, but hopefully we’ll get better every week.”

Clovis teams return to action on Monday in a triangular with Hobbs and Rio Rancho to be played at UNM South in Albuquerque, site of this year’s 5A state tournament in May.
