LAS CRUCES — Clovis High’s softball team bounced back from losses in the first two rounds to win twice on Saturday and earn ninth place in a 16-team tournament here.

Freshman Lynnae Logan pitched a five-hitter in a morning game as the Lady Wildcats beat El Paso Ysleta 2-1, then the bats came alive for 12 hits in a 9-6 win over Gallup on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Cats (5-3) return to action on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. home game against Artesia, preceded by a JV contest at 4 p.m.

“We kind of struggled a little bit this morning,” CHS coach Brandi Thomas said. “The pitching we faced this weekend kind of threw us off a little — it was more like slow-pitch — but we finally started to settle down.

“We finished the weekend well.”

Ysleta broke through for an unearned run off Logan in the bottom of the fourth, but Clovis came back for two runs in the top of the fifth. Jordan Garrett doubled, took third on a bunt single by Maria Gallegos and scored on Brittney Mascarenas’ squeeze bunt.

Lorena Garza then drove Gallegos home from second with a single.
Logan finished with a five-hitter, walking four and striking out six.

Gallup erased a 4-0 deficit against the Lady Cats with four unearned runs in the third, but CHS promptly answered with four in the top of the fourth to regain control. Sophomore Adriana Aguilar went the distance in the circle for Clovis, allowing 10 hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

Samantha Ramos keyed a three-run second with a two-run double. The four-run fourth was highlighted by a two-run single by Mascarenas and an RBI single by Garza.

Clovis survived five errors in the field to notch the win over the Lady Bengals. Garrett, Kim Lumsden, Nicole Anaya and Mascarenas all had two hits in the game for the Lady Cats.
