Cannon couple completes marathon

Four months of intense training paid off June 3 when four Cannon Air Force Base family members crossed the finish line at the San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon.

Holly Pingrey, Stephanie Wolf, Christine Caldwell and Capt. John Caldwell raced through southern California’s hills and streets to complete the 26.2 mile marathon. “We’ve done half marathons before,” Christine Caldwell said, “but this was the first full marathon for all of us.”

According to www.rnrmarathon.com, 21,400 runners participated in the marathon. Live bands, entertainment stages and cheerleading squads dotted the marathon course the group ran. After trekking through scenic San Diego, Calif., including skirting the San Diego Zoo, the marathon ended at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Point Loma.

The Caldwells, who have been married for five years, ran four times a week and cross trained to prepare for the event, Christine Caldwell said. The day before the long run, the Air Force wife said the foursome enjoyed a large Italian dinner. “We got to eat carbs without guilt,” she said with a laugh.

Christine Caldwell said she began running to cope when her husband was deployed to Iraq.
“Completing this marathon was the biggest accomplishment of my life,” she said, “we all had big smiles when it was over.”
