Hip-Hop dancers hit Clovis stage

Freedom New Mexico

Pounding percussion and a live DJ set the stage for the hip-hop dancers in BREAK! The Urban Funk Spectacular.

Utilizing a combination of athletic ability, agility and graceful choreography, the show traces the dance genre’s evolution over the past 30 years.

Leaping and spinning their way across stages around the globe, the show’s cast has drawn standing ovations in five continents, according to the show’s Web site.

The dancers are promoted as “the best in the world” on the show’s Web site and are said to have performed with the likes of Janet Jackson, P Diddy, Whitney Houston, Luther Vandros and Ringo Starr.

With beginnings in Africa, the hip-hop genre has found a home in America as it continues to change and grow, according to the show’s Web site. It is comprised of five elements, Dance, MC, DJ, Graffiti and Fashion, with each component “improvised and recombined in a myriad of rhythms and styles so that hip-hop reinvents itself continually,” according to the show’s Web site.

Part of the Clovis Community College Cultural Arts Series, BREAK! The Urban Funk Spectacular is set for 7 p.m. Saturday at the Marshall Middle School Auditorium.

Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for seniors, students, military and children. Tickets are available at the CCC cashier windows or at the door the evening of the show.
