On a night when Lubbock was abuzz with news of Bobby Knight’s sudden resignation, the Clovis Wildcats quietly came in and pushed their season-opening winning streak to 21 games.
Jaye Crockett scored 26 points and Bryce Hill added 19 in a 78-55 victory over Trinity Christian. The game was played at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock.
Clovis turned a 23-21 lead after one into a 47-23 lead at halftime, then scored on their first three possessions of the second half.
“For most of the year, we’ve had a good third quarter coming out of halftime,” Clovis coach J.D. Isler said. “I’ve always felt that was important.
“If you let a team get a run in the third quarter, you’re in for a fight.”
Next up for Clovis is Friday night’s home game against rival Hobbs.

Portales High School music teacher Franklin Smith is among 19 finalists for the Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching. That’s according to a news release from the Golden Apple Foundation of New Mexico.
The award has been given to 74 New Mexico teachers since 1996. This year’s award winners will be honored April 11 at Hotel Albuquerque.

U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., spoke to New Mexico lawmakers on Monday and shared this story:
“Almost 20 years ago, I spoke at the annual meeting of the New Mexico Electric Cooperatives down in Ruidoso. After I finished speaking, two ladies came up, tugged on my coat and began thanking me profusely.
“I asked them what I had done to earn such thanks. They explained that because of my support for rural electrification, they had reliable electric power for the first time.
“So, they decided to give me a present — an old galvanized washboard! They no longer needed it to wash by hand. They had electricity at long last. I still have that old washboard, with a photograph of Christina Rael and Amandita Aragon, displayed in my office.
“That story sums up what being your United States senator has meant to me — working for people, making real and steady progress, day by day.”
Domenici, first elected in 1972, has announced he will retire as of January 2009.
