School board debates grass replacement

The Clovis Municipal School Board will vote Tuesday whether to take a pass on grass.

At issue at the board meeting, set for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bella Vista Elementary, is a proposal to outfit Leon Williams Stadium with an artificial surface.

The change would cost roughly $600,000, Clovis Athletic Director Brian Stacy said, but he estimates the turf would pay for itself in seven years.
Stacy said he has about $150,000 in contributions so far, and the bond funds spent on the remainder would be re-couped in groundskeeping expenses.

“Right now,” Stacy said, “I spend about $85,000 a year” on water, labor and supplies to maintain the natural surface at Leon Williams Stadium.
