Clovis police and Cannon Air Force Base explosive experts were called in Thursday night after a baseball team spotted a suspicious item at Bell Park.
Capt. Patrick Whitney of the Clovis Police Department said about 8:30 p.m. Cannon Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians were in the process of X-raying the item to determine if it posed a danger.
Shortly after 9 p.m., officials were unable to determine if the package had explosives. They disposed of the package on scene.
Police closed off more than a block of Ash Street from Fifth to Seventh streets along the entrance to the park.
The Clovis High baseball team was practicing on the field when they noticed a package around 5:30 p.m. that was covered in denim with a cord and duct tape wrapped around it, Whitney said.
Police were alerted and the field was evacuated.
Police called for additional assistance from Cannon’s EOD team and a bomb dog.
The bomb dog did not alert on the package, Whitney said, but EOD was investigating, “just to be on the safe side.”
