Zias’ Murphy attains milestone in loss

ADA, Okla. — Eastern New Mexico University junior libero Caitlin Murphy reached a milestone on Saturday, but East Central kept the Zias winless in Lone Star Conference volleyball action with a 25-14, 25-21, 25-14 decision.

Murphy posted a match-high 24 digs, giving her 616 for the season and making her the third player in the history of the program to reach 600 digs in a season. Tamera Moorehead and Stacey Tapper recorded 636 and 635, respectively, in the 1989 season.

East Central (11-20, 4-7 LSC), which lost in five sets to the Zias in ENMU’s tournament in September, used a 6-1 run to break open a 10-10 tie in the first game. ENMU (6-26, 0-11) kept the second game close, but the Tigers finished on a 5-2 run.

East Central then bolted to a 13-4 lead in the third game and cruised to the sweep.

Patricia Underwood had 11 kills while Katy Fields and Jacqueline Sparks each posted nine kills and 11 digs for the Tigers. ENMU got seven kills and four block assists from freshman middle blocker Jessica King.
