Tax season approaching

By Myra Barnum: Cannon Tax Office manager

Tax season, one of the most dreaded times of the year, is once again upon us. However, completing and filing your tax forms can be painless, simple and free if you come to the Cannon Tax Office, which opens on Jan. 26 and will remain open until April 17. The tax office is located at the legal office building.

All active duty personnel, family members, retirees and federal civilian employees may have their federal and state income tax returns prepared free at the center. Last year nearly 1,000 federal and more than 1,200 state returns were prepared center volunteers, which saved the Cannon community almost $156 thousand in tax preparation fees.

Tax form 1040EZ walk-in hours are all day Jan. 26-30 and then on Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Thursdays from 11a.m. to 4 p.m. These walk-in visits are appropriate for individuals who are single or married with no children or property and who eligible to file a Form 1040EZ. Individuals filing Forms 1040 or 1040A should call 784-7304 to schedule an appointment. Appointments are available throughout the week starting Feb. 2.

There are certain things to bring to expedite service. Social security cards, birth dates of taxpayers and dependents, last year’s tax return, routing and account information for direct deposit of refund, federal economic stimulus amount, W-2s,1099s, real estate taxes paid, investment income paperwork, powers of attorney (if applicable) and any other tax paperwork will speed the process.

Due to lack of space and volume of people served, please make arrangements for child care while filing your taxes.

Watch, Cannon Connections, the Commander’s Access Channel and the 27 SOW/JA newsletter for information, updates and tax tips.
