Portales police waiting for autopsy in fatal vehicle strike

Portales Police Department is waiting for an autopsy report to using in determining possible charges against the 16-year-old who struck a 71-year-old woman with his vehicle Oct. 30.

The teenager was identified as Trevor James Nuckols of Portales in police reports.

The woman, Gloria Ann Inge, was struck as she crossed Second Street at the Abilene Street intersection, and she later died.

Nuckols failed to yield to pedestrian traffic in a marked crosswalk striking Inge, according to a police preliminary report. He has not been cited at this time.

Police Deputy Chief Lonnie Berry said the department is waiting for a Lubbock hospital to return the autopsy report.

“The medical examiners are slow,” Berry said. “If it was in New Mexico, we would have already had the preliminary stuff back, but Texas wants all kinds of little things.”

Berry said once police have the details of Inge’s injuries, then he can tell what part of the vehicle struck her.

“It does matter what her cause of death was,” Berry said. “If the cause of death was a heart attack, as opposed to the crash, then it would effect how we charge someone.”

“We’re probably going to go over to Lubbock this week and wait on their doorstep until they give us something,” Berry said.

Berry said this case is not related to the incident in which a Portales High School student was hit by a car on campus in mid-October.

Nuckols declined to comment.
