Tarleton hands Hounds first LSC South loss

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS —Tarleton State handed Eastern New Mexico University its first Lone Star Conference South loss and did so in convincing fashion.

Effran Bryant lead four Texan starters in double figures with 13 points as Tarleton State beat the Greyhounds 76-36 Wednesday.

Jeremiah Wilson added his seventh double-double of the season — 10 points and 10 rebounds — for the division-leading Texans (14-3, 2-0 LSC South).

Equis Darby led ENMU (7-10, 2-1) with 11 points.

The Hounds tied the game at 15 on a three-point play from Darby with 12:05 left in the first half, but it was all Tarleton State after that. The Texans closed the first half with a 23-4 run over the final 10:47 of play to seize a 38-19 halftime lead.

Tarleton opened the second half with a 14-1 run to end any thoughts of an ENMU comeback.

The loss dropped the Hounds into a second place tie with West Texas A&M.

The Texans, who came into the game ranked No. 2 in the nation in field goal percentage defense and No. 5 in scoring defense, held ENMU to a season-low for points. The Hounds’ previous low was 49 points in a Jan. 2 loss to Division I Brigham Young.

The Texans shot 38 percent (11-of-29) from 3-point range and held a 40-22 rebounding edge.
