Judge to make Isler decision by Friday

A federal judge is expected to decide later this week if J.D. Isler can continue coaching the Clovis Wildcat boys varsity basketball team.

A hearing at U.S. District Court in Albuquerque Wednesday lasted more than six hours and the judge announced she hoped to reach a decision by Friday, according to Clovis senior and varsity basketball player Landyn Snipes.

Warren Frost, Isler’s attorney, said Tuesday he planned to argue for the continuation of a restraining order allowing Isler to coach.

Frost could not be reached for comment Wednesday night.

Isler is accused of recruiting players. He was suspended by the New Mexico Activities Association in mid-December.

The school later notified Isler he would be fired as coach Jan. 13.

An attorney representing Snipes and fellow senior Logan Turnbow filed Tuesday to intervene in the case, arguing Isler’s suspension and termination would have devastating effect on them academically and athletically.
