Saturday, Eastern New Mexico University starts its Saturday Night Lab series, featuring student directed plays.

There are three 45-minute plays — “Poe Poe Poe,” “Copenhagen” and “Gildenstern and Rosencrantz are Dead.”

Students are given 45 minute time limits in which to present a self-directed adaptation of plays they have selected, editing the plays, conducting auditions and all the other elements of the plays.

At 7 p.m., “Copenhagen” centers on two scientists looking back at the creation of the atom bomb and the moral issues in making it. This one is directed by Jacob Senn of Portales.

“Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead” is directed by Vanessa Kahin of Hobbs, and “Poe Poe Poe” is directed by Jeff Darnell of Portales.

The plays are performed in The Studio Theater, nicknamed “The Black Box,” where the audience is seated on all four sides of the actors.

The series is free and open to the public.
