A 26-year-old Melrose was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty Tuesday to abusing his 3-month-old daughter.

Phillip Holmes is required to serve an additional two years of parole upon completion of his sentence and participate in mandatory counseling, according to a press release from the District Attorney Matt Chandler.

Holmes was arrested in March 2009 after hospital workers told police his daughter was brought to the emergency room with two broken arms and bruising, the release said.

The child’s mother told police she stepped out of the house for a short period of time, the release said, and left her daughter in Holmes’ care.

Holmes initially told police the child fell from a bed and was attacked by a puppy, then told investigators he dropped her by accident, the release said.
