PORTALES — Freshman forward Brook Serrano tallied two goals and the Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team pulled away in the second half Thursday for a 6-1 victory over Wayland Baptist at the ENMU pitch.
The Zias (2-3) scored six unanswered goals after Wayland opened the scoring on a tally by Kathleen Stewart less than eight minutes into the contest.
ENMU tied it with 17 minutes left in the half on a goal by freshman Maurisa Jones and went in front less than 4 1/2 minutes later when Kimberly Luna found the back of the net.
The Zias hit the Pioneers (1-3) with a four-goal splurge midway through the second half, including both of Serrano’s tallies. Justyne Tydings had a goal and an assist for ENMU.
ENMU drops LSC volleyball opener — LyGene Traylor had 11 kills and four block assists and Texas Woman’s turned back ENMU 25-23, 25-20, 27-25 Thursday night in the Lone Star Conference volleyball opener for both schools at Greyhound Arena.
Junior middle blockers Stacey Main and Kristen Beck led the Zias (5-5) with 10 kills apiece.
TWU (3-6) erased a 17-12 deficit with a 7-1 run and held on in the first game. The Pioneers led all the way through the second game, though never by more than six points.
The third set featured 14 ties and four lead changes. ENMU led 25-25 on Jessica King’s ace, but the Pioneers got two kills from Traylor around an ENMU attack error to close out the match.
ENMU hosts Texas A&M-Commerce at 2 p.m. Saturday.
