Cannon Connections staff

The Air Force is planning four meetings in northern New Mexico regarding a proposal to establish a Low Altitude Tactical Navigation area for Special Operation forces at Cannon Air Force Base.

The schedule for the meetings is as follows:

• Thursday, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., State Capitol Building Rm. 322, 425 Don Gaspar, Santa Fe

• Thursday, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Rio Grande Hall, Taos

• Oct. 15, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Commission Chambers, City Hall, Raton

• Oct. 15, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Leveo Sanchez Auditorium, Las Vegas, N.M.

A LATN area allows airmen to practice low level military flight activities (between 200 and 500 feet above the ground). The airspace identified extends just north of Colorado Springs, Colo., west to Aspen and Grand Junction, Colo. and south to Torrance, Guadalupe and Curry counties in New Mexico.

Public scoping meetings are also being scheduled for Colorado locations.

The initial public scoping period runs through Nov. 15, and is being conducted to allow public comment, and identification of issues, prior to initiating an environmental assessment.
