Zias soccer coach stepping down

Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer coach Ray Nause has turned in his resignation at the school, effective at the end of the current season.

Nause has been the Zias’ coach since 2008, compiling a record of 21-31 in that time, including 6-21 in the Lone Star Conference. ENMU is 3-11 (0-7) this season with four matches left, all in conference play.

The Zias have struggled in close matches this season, going 0-5 in contests decided by one goal after posting an 11-11 mark in such outings during his first two seasons.

“This was Ray’s decision,” ENMU athletic director Jeff Geiser said Tuesday. “Coach Nause is an outstanding individual and probably the hardest-working, most-devoted soccer coach I’ve ever seen.”

Geiser said the school is hoping to fill the position by the end of the semester, and from a recruiting standpoint it’s helpful to know at this point that a change will have to be made.

A phone message left for Nause was not returned.
