Airman 1st Class Jeff Swislocki won Friday’s Turkey Trot 5K Fun Run as he expected.

Swislocki said he participates in as many fun runs or marathons he can, including the monthly 5K’s hosted by the Cannon Fitness Center.

Swislocki said he runs between 45 to 50 miles a week in training for two marathons next spring and summer in California. He said he’s been running since high school.

“I was trying to beat 18 minutes,” he said. “I try to beat myself on my time.”

Swislocki finished at 18:19, just seven seconds slower than last year.

“The wind was rough,” he said.

Even though he is racing himself, he said the other runners motivate him.

“They definitely push me, motivate me, to run faster,” Swislocki said.

The first man and woman to finish the race won a turkey. Swislocki said he’ll be donating his because he’s going home to Cleveland, for Thanksgiving.

Senior Airman Katie Patterson with the Fitness Center said the fun run encourage people to get out and run.

“We like to get people out and to know we’re here to support them and their fitness goals,” she said.

Staff Sgt. Christ Weichman, 30, and his wife Abby ran with strollers full of their three children; 3-year-old twins Ruby and Gracie and 9-month-old Tyson and their German shorthair Brandy running along side.

Abby Weichman, 32, said the family just moved here from Fairchild Air Force Base, Wash., and hadn’t had a chance to run together in a while.

“I like organized events so I don’t have to take the kids out on the road,” she said.

Weichman said her husband hates to run but told her he enjoyed it when they met.

“We want the kids to get into it but we’ll see,” she said, laughing.
