Inmate died of natural causes

Medical investigators have ruled a 58-year-old Curry County inmate died of natural causes.

Jose Segovia suffered severe heart and kidney issues and had survived a prior heart attack, according to an autopsy report obtained this week from the New Mexico Office of Medical Investigators.

The Curry County Sheriff’s Office has said Segovia died May 2 at Plains Regional Medical Center.

A jail nurse called 911 when Segovia began complaining of chest and back pain and moved him to a separate cell where he was given nitro glycerin tablets, the report said.

At the hospital emergency room he became unresponsive and after 30 minutes of resuscitation efforts, the report said he was pronounced dead.

The opinion given in the report named heart disease as the cause of death.

Sheriff’s officials have previously said he was on medication for heart problems.

Segovia had been in the facility since March 9 awaiting adjudication on charges of aggravated DWI, third offense, failing to comply with release conditions and numerous traffic offenses.
