Good morning and welcome to the Freedom New Mexico Friday briefing.

The state Higher Education Department is seeking applications for the No Child Left Behind Title II Improving Teacher Quality grants.

The program aims to help shape state and local activities to improve teacher quality and to increase the number of highly qualified teachers, paraprofessionals and principals.

Colleges, universities and high-need local education agencies are eligible to apply, according to the information.

The grant program is to distribute $593,845.

On this day in 1903, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Orville and Wilbur Wright make the first successful flight in history of a self-propelled, heavier-than-air aircraft.

Orville piloted the gasoline-powered, propeller-driven biplane, which stayed aloft for 12 seconds and covered 120 feet on its inaugural flight.
