Lighthouse Mission to host senior day

The Lighthouse Mission is gearing up for the first of two events in honor of seniors in 2011.

The mission initiated Senior Day in 2010 as a way to appreciate what senior citizens have done, said Executive Director Richard Gomez.

“They’re the ones that have made the city what it is. We want to honor them for all the hard work they’ve done in our community,” Gomez said.

The mission hosts two senior days a year. The first of 2011 will take place 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday and a second will be scheduled for summer, Gomez said.

The event includes a free breakfast of eggs, potatoes, bacon, chili, biscuits, pancakes, coffee, milk and juice and a chance to shop the Lighthouse’ donated items, including clothing, for free.

Gomez said seniors from Clovis, Portales and surrounding communities such as Melrose, Texico, Farwell and Grady have been invited.

Portales Seniors President Miriam Welker said at least a few seniors from the center are planning to attend.

“I think it’s great,” Welker said of the event. “That’s a big help.”

Annie Roybal, a member of the La Casa Senior Citizens Center, said she’s planning to attend and will be spreading the word about the event.

“It’s a very good thing,” she said. “It’s helping the seniors that are on a limited income. They get a chance to choose things they need.”

Gomez said about 70 seniors attended the event in January 2010 and another 30 attended the summer event. He’s hoping for higher attendance this year.

“We thought that it would be a good deal for the seniors to come and enjoy a day of shopping,” Gomez said.
