Friday morning briefing: Uh-oh it’s the 13th, cut a ribbon and donate food

Good morning and welcome to the Freedom New Mexico Friday briefing.
It’s also Friday the 13th, for those of you who might be superstitious.

It’s official

The first YMCA for Clovis in more than 30 years officially opens with a ribbon cutting 2 p.m. today at the newly renovated building, 2300 N. Main St.

It’s open to the public.

Special delivery

A reminder, the annual Letter Carriers’ Food Drive is from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday across eastern New Mexico.

Place non-perishable food items in a bag by your mailbox and your postal service folks will pick it up and deliver it to a local food bank.

Pet checkup

There is also a low cost vet clinic from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday at Pet Sense in Clovis.

Information: 762-7239.

Quirky quote of the day

“The first law of dietetics seems to be: If it tastes good, it’s bad for you.” — Issac Asimov

Today in history

On this day in 1981, Pope John Paul II is shot and wounded at St. Peter’s Square in Rome, Italy.

Turkish terrorist Mehmet Ali Agca, an escaped fugitive already convicted of a previous murder, fired several shots at the religious leader, two of which wounded nearby tourists.

Here’s the rest of the story:

Today — Sunny, with a high near 74. North wind between 10 and 15 mph.

Tonight — Mostly clear, with a low around 44. Northeast wind between 5 and 15 mph.

Looking forward —
