State and local fire crews are working contain a blaze that has consumed about 600 acres of remote grassland along the boundary between Curry and Quay counties.

The fire started Wednesday evening on the Caprock north of Broadview, said Dan Ware, spokesman for the state forestry division.

Ware said the region is a “really inaccessible area as vehicles go,” and crews have been working to cut fire lines around the fire to stop its progress.

There are no structures compromised by the blaze, he said, describing the area as a small canyon.

Ware said the fire was approximately 60 percent contained as of early afternoon Thursday with 13 departments working to get it under control.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, he said.
