Monday morning briefing: Memorial Day, school budget and the big race

Good morning and happy Memorial Day. Welcome to the Freedom New Mexico Monday briefing.

This holiday

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.

Coming up

The Roosevelt General Hospital board is scheduled to evaluate CEO Larry Leaming in closed session at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the RGH board room.

Any action taken after the closed session is open to the public.

Special meeting

The Clovis Municipal Schools board meets in special session noon Tuesday at the district’s central offices to consider a new budget.

It’s open to the public.

Quirky quote of the day

“You know there is a problem with the education system when you realize that out of the 3 R’s only one begins with an R.” — Dennis Miller
