PORTALES — From a field of nearly 100 candidates for its open baseball head coaching position, Eastern New Mexico University has pared it down to nine.

Athletic director Jeff Geiser said Monday that he will try to interview all of them by phone beginning on Wednesday, with three to five to be invited for on-campus interviews starting Monday.

ENMU is looking to replace longtime coach Phil Clabaugh, who stepped down late last month after 20 seasons at the helm.

“It’s a pretty strong pool,” Geiser said. “We had a pretty strong pool to start with.”

The candidates include two junior college head coaches, two juco assistants, two Division I assistants, an NAIA head coach, a Division III head coach and an assistant coach at another Lone Star Conference school.

Geiser said the new coach’s salary will be dependent on experience, but added he thinks ENMU’s offer will be competitive with other schools in the LSC. He said the average salary for a baseball head coach in the conference is $52,360.

“I think our salaries are competitive,” he said. “The cost of living here isn’t as high as it is in some more metropolitan areas.”

Geiser said he hopes to know the finalists by Wednesday, and would like a new coach in place by June 16.
