Food for flowers

Area residents can participate in FTD Good Neighbor Day Sept. 7 at Hestands Floral and Gifts, 813 W. Second St., Portales.

In exchange for three cans of food for the Community Services Center food pantry, participants receive a dozen carnations, according to the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce website.


Top athletes

Eastern New Mexico University Athletic Director Dr. Jeff Geiser has announced that Tillman Stevens of Baytown, Texas, is the Greatest Greyhound for 2010-11and Nicole Reid of Pueblo, Colo., is the Greatest Zia.

Stevens, currently an assistant with the football team, led the Lone Star

Conference and finished tied for seventh in the nation, with 11.1 tackles

per game.

Reid Was the Zias’ top finisher four of cross country seven meets last

year, and earned All-Lone Star Conference status after taking fourth at

the championships.

Scout fair

Mark your calendars for “A Scout Fair” Sept. 10 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Greene Acres Park in Clovis.

It features Cub and Boy Scouts from Clovis and Portales. Knot tying and rope making demonstrations.

There’s also a Rain Gutter Regalia — a rain gutter filled with water to allow children to race boats.

It’s free and open to anyone.

On this day in 1888, prostitute Mary Ann Nichols, the first victim of London serial killer “Jack the Ripper,” is found murdered and mutilated in Whitechapel’s Buck’s Row.

The East End of London saw four more victims of the murderer during the next few months, but no suspect was ever found.
