At Wichita Falls, Texas, the Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team managed small leads in each game, but Midwestern State eventually pulled away to take a 25-17, 25-21, 25-16 win over the Zias on Tuesday night in the Lone Star Conference opener for both squads.
Junior Tarrah Sweet’s ace gave the Zias a quick lead in the first set, but it was all Mustangs after that. MSU (4-1) went on an 18-10 run to take control and quickly closed it out for a 1-0 lead.
Midway through the second game, ENMU (1-4) held a 16-14 lead before committing four consecutive attack errors. In the third game, ENMU managed a 7-5 lead on a kill by Kristen Beck, and pulled even 10-10 on a kill by Amber Durand before the Mustangs scored 10 of the next 14 points to take control.
Caitlin Wallace had a match-high 10 kills for the Mustangs, while junior outside hitter Evelyn Escobar notched eight kills for the Zias.
