HOBBS —After a slow start, Clovis beat Hobbs 42-7 Friday to win the District 4-5A title and earn an automatic berth in the state playoffs.
Jonathan Johnson and Kamal Cass ran for touchdowns in the final five minutes of the second quarter to give Clovis a 14-0 halftime lead
Johnson capped a five-play, 67-yard Clovis drive with a 4-yard run to put the Wildcats up 7-0. Kamal Cass had a 49-yard run in the drive.
Cass reversed fields and scored from 10 yards out with a minute to go in the half to make it 14-0. Trey Orozco had a pair of big plays in the drive — a 29-yard run and 23-yard pass to tight end Djon Ford.
Clovis outgained Hobbs 116 to 79 in the first two quarters.
