Perry

Col. Emily (Barck) Perry, a graduate of Eastern New Mexico University (M.A., ‘87) recently had the “unbelievable” experience of meeting the Dalai Lama during his visit to the Hessen Parliament in Wiesbaden, Germany. Pushing through the crowds to meet the visitor head on, Col. Perry said to him, “The USA also welcomes Your Highness. I have read many of your books, and I have dreamed of meeting you.”

The Dalai Lama, noting that she was a woman in the U.S. military, spoke about the compassion of women and added, “Hereinafter, the Dalai Lama could be a woman.”

A picture of Col. Perry meeting the Dalai Lama was circulated in the German newspapers, and Perry was also featured in the Herald Union, a military newspaper, and was declared its “hero of the week.”

Col. Perry, stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, is a human resources specialist with the Installation Management Command-Europe. She travels to Kaiserslautern, Germany, frequently for drill and other functions with her unit.

Perry is the daughter of Miriam Deen, an English instructor at ENMU.
