Gifts for kids
The Lighthouse Mission needs donations for its annual Childrens Christmas Celebration.
They need toys, apples, oranges, peanuts, canned soda and bags of individually wrapped candy.
Donations can be dropped off at the mission, 407 La Casillas Blvd., between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Deadline is Dec. 15.

Music, music, music
Eastern New Mexico University will host a Steel Band performance at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Buchanan Hall of the Music Building in Portales.
The repertoire includes calypso and other Caribbean styles along with jazz and pop-influenced music.
The event is free and open to the public.

On this day in 1945, five U.S. Navy Avenger torpedo-bombers comprising Flight 19 take off from the Fort Lauderdale Naval Air Station in Florida on a routine three-hour training mission, never to return from the Bermuda Triangle.
