Thursday morning briefing: Cleaning up, citizen police and down under

Good morning and welcome to the Freedom New Mexico Thursday briefing.

Scoop the poop

For the convenience of those who walk pets on campus, Eastern New Mexico University has installed four pet waste stations.

Each station provides bags and a trash can.

They are located by the Administration Building, Campus Bookstore, between the Campus Union Building and College of Business Building, and between the campus fountain and Jack Williamson Liberal Arts Building.

And as an aside…

ENMU’s Greyhound mascots, Vic and Tory, had their paws imprinted in cement on the foundation of the pet waste station by the Campus Bookstore on Tuesday.

A ENMU walk of fame, of sorts.

Citizen police

The Clovis Police Department, Curry County Sheriff’s Office, and New Mexico State Police are conducting a Citizens Police Academy.

Classes will be held on Tuesday’s, beginning Feb. 28 for 12 weeks.

Applications are available at the Clovis Police Department records section,

or via email:

Info: Community Relations Officer Daron Roach at (575)

Deadline for application is Feb. 17.

Kitchen tip

Try roasting a chicken or roast on top of long slices of celery or carrot sticks. The vegetables act like a roasting rack plus add flavor to the meat.

It’s a fact

A sneeze can exceed 100 mph: When a sneeze leaves your body, it does so at high speeds — so you should avoid suppressing it and causing damage to your body.

Today in history

On Jan. 26, 1788, Capt. Arthur Phillip guides a fleet of 11 British ships carrying convicts to the colony of New South Wales, effectively founding Australia.

Here’s the rest of the story:

Today — Sunny, with a high near 57. North wind 10 to 15 mph becoming east.

Tonight — Mostly clear, with a low around 32. Southwest wind between 5 and 10 mph.
