Monday morning briefing: Soup, tax help and the Lone Ranger

Good morning and welcome to the Freedom New Mexico Monday briefing.

Souper Bowl

The Salvation Army’s annual Souper Bowl fundraiser is 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday at the organization’s building in Clovis, 317 E. Second St.

$5 gets you a choice of home cooked green chili stew, minestrone, posole or potato soup and… you get to keep the bowl.

To go orders for $6.

Tax help

AARP volunteers are offering free tax return preparation 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. today through Thursday at Roy Walker Recreation Center, 316 W. Second.

For all ages with middle to low income and walk-ins only.

Kitchen tip

You can substitute one cup of buttermilk with one tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice, then top up the rest of the measuring cup with whole milk. Set aside for 5 minutes, stir, then use as buttermilk in the recipe.

On this day in 1933, With the stirring notes of the William Tell Overture and a shout of “Hi-yo, Silver! Away!” The Lone Ranger debuts on Detroit’s WXYZ radio station.

The creation of station-owner George Trendle and writer Fran Striker, the “masked rider of the plains” became one of the most popular and enduring western heroes of the 20th century.
